For Model Year 2009, Dodge has taken the Ram 1500 to new levels.  The changes are substantive and embrace functionality, ride, utility and a philosophy that dictates quality and the implementation of cutting edge innovations.  We previewed and road tested the new 1500 Ram and walked away impressed by the fact that it provides a bench mark against which to measure other medium duty pickup trucks.

The cosmetic/visual enhancements are profound, with the grill angled slightly back (top to bottom) giving a frontal presentation of prowess.  The hood’s power bulge is larger and bolder than ever before, while the Ram insignia that is now also larger and more in-your-face matches the aggressive and appealing exterior lines and presentation of the Ram 1500. New colors have been added for 2009.  Equally important and substantive are the engineering advancements Dodge has packed into this latest iteration of the Ram 1500.

To begin with the Ram 1500

now for the first time is available with three different cab configurations (standard, extended and crew cab), with the crew cab being offered for the first time.  The box comes in three different lengths (depending upon the style of cab) with some models featuring the new water tight, lockable Ram Box Management System storage compartments that are designed into the sidewalls of the box.  Each compartment yields 7.4 cubic feet of storage and will accommodate fishing poles, hunting rifles and golf clubs.  Ten cases of 12-oz beverages can be packed inside and stowed with ice for drain plugs in the bottom of each Ram Box permit melting ice (water) to be dispersed.  But the addition of creative new storage compartments does not end there.  Easy access to floor storage compartments call Store In the Floor (in the floor well of the rear seat) features removable bins for ease of cleaning.  The front seats are heated and ventilated and the rear seats can be enjoyed with a heating option.

Major engineering/design changes made includes an all new rear suspension.  In 2009 Dodge Ram has gone to a coil spring, multi link rear suspension, a move that improves comfort in ride without compromise hauling and handling characteristics.  And as for its hauling capacities, the Ram 1500 can haul up to 1,850 pounds in the bed of the truck which makes it a perfect fit for a medium size truck camper.  Three engines are available; the 3.7L V6; 4.7L V8 and the Hemi 5.7L V8.  Four or five speed automatic transmissions, part time and on demand transfer cases and a solid rear axle contribute to the 2009 Ram’s state-of-the–art power train.   This pickup truck is capable of towing 9,100 pounds.

The opportunities the Ram 1500 provides the towable RV enthusiast (travel trailer or fifth wheel) and the truck camper aficionado to enjoy their passions merit attention.  Towing a large Airstream travel trailer we experienced the excellent road manners and handling characteristics the Ram 1500 exhibits under load.  We challenged this duo (truck and travel trailer) to aggressive braking and acceleration scenarios and to twisting winding roads.  Suffice it to say their performance was flawless. Standard equipment this year on the Ram 1500 now includes the Dodge ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program) that senses and precludes trailer sway when onboard sensors detect that forces are being exerted on the Ram that may cause loss of control or jackknifing.  This is really good stuff!

With a Mfg.
