Monaco Knight:  Where Entry Level Means Luxury

Lazelle Jones

Offered at a price point where the motorcoach enthusiast can easily make the transition up into realm of luxury diesel pusher motorhomes, the affordable 2006 Monaco Knight may in fact be the last motorcoach you will ever need.

Introduced in 2000, Monaco continues to enhance and improve the Knight, with this Model  Year being no exception.  Among the litany of new and improved standard/optional features, are enhancements that merit enumeration.

Leading the list of “What’s New Features,” is the Panaview ® one piece windshield.  The pilot and co-pilot now have a totally uninterrupted view of the world outside.  That’s right, there is no longer a center post to deal with.  And the windshield wipers park in the horizontal position like they do on an automobile, not in the vertical position as they do on most motor homes.  In fact, Panaview is now standard in all Monaco Coaches.

Improving functionality and comfort is the passenger six-way power captain seat with power footrest (this option is now standard).  Carling switches that include both an icon and verbiage is now a choice the coach owner can make in their instrumentation and controls presentation.  And to ensure good visibility along both sides of the coach, 17.5” chrome power heated mirrors (with turn signals) are standard.  For 2006 the entry way stairwell has been dressed with low maintenance laminated tile flooring, where previously it was an option.

From front to rear (the salon, galley and rear state room areas), the livability has been improved.  Case in point is the interior height which is now an amazing 84”.  (perfect for all but the very tallest of NBA players).

Previously an option and now standard is the home theater system that includes both a DVD and VCR player.  And aft of the salon area - in the state-of-the-art galley - the large 4 door refrigerator w/ice maker (previously optional) is now standard in every Monaco Knight.  Even the bedroom wardrobe slide-out has been redesigned both for aesthetics and to facilitate access and functionality.

Model Year 2006 sees two new floor plans being offered (the 40 PDQ and the 40 PET), for a total of five. The 40 PET offers three slide-out rooms, one in the rear stateroom and two forward in the galley and salon areas.  The 40 PDQ features a total of four slide-outs, with the fourth slide included in the rear stateroom. The depth of one stateroom slide has been increased to 30”. The Knight is offered in three different exterior lengths (37’, 38’ and 40’).

Eye appeal is greater then ever before.  Examples include the redesign of the side hinge baggage doors - all doors now include redesigned extrusions and latch locations.  The one-piece fiberglass roof has been peaked to facilitate runoff, while residential style fiberglass insulation is now featured in both the roof and wall structures.

In addition to the visually correct interior and exterior presentations, other features that are less glamorous but so important functionally, are now featured on the Knight. Examples include a fully automatic 3-point coach leveling system and a standard manual retracting power cord reel.  A 2000-watt inverter and two additional house batteries provide an almost endless supply of 110-volt power during stand-alone camping and they are standard equipment, along with the energy management system that has been added.

The Monaco Knight now comes standard with deluxe, full body paint that is (suffice it to say) “drop dead gorgeous.”  Further underscoring the correctness of this coach’s presentation are the standard polished aluminum wheels and the full length, coach wide mud flap.  To protect the front of the coach from road debris (bugs, stones, sand, etc.), a 3M Film front is now included on every coach.  The coach enthusiast now enjoys a standard awning package that includes an Eclipse Automatic patio awning and an automatic front door awning.

To fully appreciate the Monaco Knight, it’s important to note the proven technologies embodied in the design and construction and the source of this coach’s motive prowess.  First, the foundation is Monaco Coach Corporation’s own Roadmaster Chassis , a platform that has been designed and tailored specifically for each model of the Knight.  The drive train includes the time tested and well proven Cummins 330 hp turbo charged diesel that develops 950 lbs./ft. torque at 1400 RPM.  Married to the 3000MH Allison Transmission, these components develop the power necessary to move this 33,000 pounds GVWR coach along at sea level, up and over the highest mountain passes and through all venues in between.  The Monaco Knight Class A diesel pusher can tow 10,000 lbs.

For the house portion, the Knight utilizes Monaco Coach Corporations patented and unique AlumaFrame Construction, a technology that integrates vertical and horizontal aluminum structural members that are welded together at each point where they intersect.

The walls are five layered structures, comprised of exterior gel coat fiberglass, Interlocking C-channel member are filled with 1 ½” fiberglass insulation that is glued in place so it doesn’t sag, a vapor barrier, fiberglass insulation, bead foam insulation and interior panel.  The roof is a nine-layered structural system that includes a one-piece fiberglass exterior, luan backing, bead foam insulation, aluminum double I-beams (filled with fiberglass insulation), a vapor barrier, a thermal insulation barrier, ½“ bead foam insulation and padded vinyl ceiling. The floor includes a 1-1/2” welded tubular steel infrastructure with blue foam insulation embedded in between the structural members.  To this, Structurwood, Darco (a product that protects and seals the road side of the floor structure) and Luan panel are sandwiched together.

Long story short, the Monaco has again taken the Knight to  new levels of excellence.  It’s a state-of-the-art coach that merits the coach aficionado’s attention.  Telephone 800-235-4654: Web site .  Happy Traveling!
