Eat Your Heart Out, Darwin:

The Evolution by

Fleetwood Rv

Lazelle Jones

A folding camping trailer by Fleetwood RV, the Evolution E3 is the next generation camping trailer/RV toy hauler.  It has the capability to haul an adult size ATV into the backcountry and when the ATV is off loaded the things that make the RV lifestyle so appealing can be made immediately available.

The E3 measures 21’9” (for travel) and 27’ 1” when set up fro camping.  This includes the front 800 lbs. cargo deck (measuring 54“X 84“) that is capable of handling an ATV like the Kawasaki Brute Force 650 4X4.  The deck is dressed with an oil/skid/water resistant surface.  The E3 Evolution features a slide out dinette/sleeper with front and rear platform beds that measure 77“ X 70“, each.  With its sofa/gaucho that quickly makes into a single bed, this unit comfortably sleeps up to seven.

Road manners are very good (minimal trailer sway) and because of its light weight a pickup or mid-size SUV is plenty sufficient to tow this unit.  Its stingy size makes visibility while towing a non issue.  As for aesthetics, this Fleetwood RV product is smart looking and very clean in appearance. It turns heads!

All functional aspects have been attended to very well by Fleetwood.  The aluminum cargo platform features side rails that can be quickly released and removed by pulling four pins (on each rail).  The rails can then be folded out and used as ramps to load or off-load the ATV.  With the cargo deck empty it takes about thirty minutes to have the unit totally set up for camping, even faster once you go through your learning curve.

Fleetwood has made it intuitive as to what needs to be done to set this unit up.  A hand crank is used to extend (put down) the scissors (corner stabilizing) jacks.  A second hand crank inserted through a hole in the rear bumper permits the composite roof to be quickly lifted.  The dinette slide out room is manually extended, as are both of the end platform beds.  Hinged aluminum members swing up to hold and give shape to the fabric canopies above the beds and dinette.

The entire galley folds up and into place and is instantly ready for service.  The galley complex includes a deep porcelain sink, 3-way refrigerator, two storage drawers, a cutlery tray and a two burner LP cook-top.  The solid entry door includes a screen that is stowed for travel against the interior side of the crank up roof and is lowered into place to complete setup and use.  Large screened panels on three sides of each platform bed and around the dinette can be zipped closed when privacy and/or protection from the outside is wanted.  The fabric used is breathable Sunbrella 302 tenting material.  The solid one-piece roof is a Filon structure that comes with full-length integrated roof rack tracks that facilitate ease of cranking the roof up and down.

The dinette table top comes with hinged legs that permit it to free-stand as well as be moved outside for a picnic.  When used as a sleeping quarter, the table top becomes a platform for the bed.  The E3 features a shower and a cassette style toilet.  Storage compartments are located below the gaucho sofa and on both sides of the unit, just forward of the rear platform bed.

The E3 is a single axle camping trailer that comes with 15” off-road treaded tires that are mounted on alloy rims.  The tubular steel frame features trailer wiring protection.  The rear bumper is powder coated as are the steel reinforcements.  The wheel wells are fabricated using steel and are appointed with impact resistant wheel well flares. The exterior finish can be enjoyed in either silver or yellow.

The evolution comes with dual 20-lb LP tanks, water heater and DC interior lighting.  Tip-out combo fan/lights for use above the galley and slide-out dinette, are available.  The Evolution E3 is uncomplicated yet full of livability and utility.  It comes with a base MSRP of about $13,500.
