EARTHROAMER:
The Ultimate Expedetionary Motorhome

Lazelle Jones

With a suggested retail price of $230,000, the question begs to be asked, “why does this Class C motorhome cost so much?”  This answer is as follows. The EarthRoamer is a 4WD, all-terrain, motorhome that has been designed to fill a specific niche market that until now has gone begging (photo #1).  This full-service 4WD, high-clearance unit is DESIGNED for the adventurer who refuses to settle for anything less than the ultimate expeditionary vehicle.  Even at this price point receiving and filling orders proceeds  full speed ahead.

Located in Broomfield, Colorado, the EarthRoamer is the brainchild of two aero space engineers with mechanical, electrical and systems engineering skills.  Both are themselves adventurers.  They have elected as their platform of choice both the Ford F450 or F550 truck chassis.  Both chassis  can be enjoyed in a supercab or full crew cab format, with the most popular being the F550 EarthRoamer.

What EarthRoamer does is create a passageway that provide movement between the cab of the truck and the cabin that fits aft of the cab.  It features a 19” wide cut-out that runs from the bottom of the rear window, down to the interior floor of the cabin structure. The Ford PowerStroke turbo-diesel is the only engine offered.  It yields 570 foot-pounds of torque and develops 325 hp.  The transmission is a 5-speed Torqueshift automatic.  The transfer case is manual.  Be it in the snow fields of the Las Sal Mountains of Southeastern Utah or the Canyonlands around Moab, Utah   the EarthRoamer is right at home.

The house or cabin on the EarthRoamer includes many unique features that make this the all-weather, four-season, all-terrain Class C motorhome that it is.  Its monocoque style cabin structure is similar to that used in aircraft design. EarthRoamer begins by creating individual sections that include (from the outside to the inside) a layer of gel-coat, fiberglass cloth and catalyzed resin, marine grade balsa, a second layer of fiberglass cloth and catalyzed resin, foil backed rigid foam insulation and interior Maple panel. Once the individual sections are completed they are assembled and glassed (chemically bonded) together into a monocoque, fuselage type structure.

This single piece cabin is mounted to steel cross-members that are added fore and aft on the longitudinal ladder frame of the chassis.  This configuration yields a well insulated and very quiet interior space.  The windows used are not just any windows.  They are dual pane German engineered windows that include integrated shades and bug screens.

The EarthRoamer is a true stand-alone expeditionary vehicle.  No outside power source is required to power or heat any of the equipment or appliances on board.  This unit is comfortable and safe both in extreme cold and in hot, humid climates.  The secret to its stand-alone capability is not only the energy efficient design of the cabin, but the fact that the EarthRoamer uses only diesel fuel.  The 90 gallons of diesel fuel it can carry is the fuel source for the PowerStroke, the marine style diesel furnace and the diesel ceramic galley cook-top. A hydronic system (diesel fueled coolant heater) is used to heat water and to preheat the PowerStroke in cold weather.

To enjoy the 110-volt appliances found on board, an auxiliary 110-volt generator is not (repeat “not”) needed, therefore there is none.  An absorbed glass mat(AGM) battery bank and a 2,000 watt pure sine wave inverter provide the 110-volt power for the microwave oven, coffee maker, and the 6,000 BTU wall mounted, refrigerant based air conditioner. Lights, fans, the entertainment systems and the 7.0 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer are all 12-volt DC and receive their power directly from the AGM battery bank. The batteries are charged by the PowerStroke’s dual engine alternators and by the massive 510 watt complex of roof mounted solar panels.  A 30 amp shore-power cable provides power when the vehicle is in storage or during a stay at an RV campground.

By no means is the EarthRoamer short on creature comforts .  It comes replete with a fully equipped wet bath, an external hot and cold shower, a state of the art galley with granite counters and a polished stainless steel sink.  The king size over-the-cab bed and a dinette that converts into an additional sleeping quarter, provide comfort for up to four adults.

The options EarthRoamer offers are designed to support those who are into expeditionary adventures and stand alone camping.  They can include one or two electric winches (a front and a rear); HID off-road lights; a GPS navigation system; a state-of-the-art DVD/CD player; a 15” LCD television and an in motion satellite system.

For many the EarthRoamer exceeds end user needs.  For others it solves a host of in-the-field mobility and livability issues.  Their telephone number is 720-304-3174.  Their website is noted above.  Check it out!
