The 26 Foot

Born Free

Class C Motorhome

Lazelle Jones

Designed around the Ford E450 Chassis, the synergy that exists between this platform and the 26’ Born Free Casual Elegance (designed and built by Dodgen Industries of Humboldt, Iowa) represents design at its best.  In addition to creature comforts, interior elegance, luxury appointments and craftsmanship, this Born Free features an important mix of functional properties.

Today, many coach owners are downsizing.  They no longer want to deal with piloting a large Class A down the highway or through urban settings.  At the same time they are unwilling to compromise the luxury RV lifestyle they are accustomed to.  Enter the 26‘ Born Free.  It yields both luxury and comfort and because of its overall length (26’ 7”) it’s easily navigated through urban setting; along winding country or mountain roads, almost anywhere a full size sedan can be driven.

The way Dodgen Industries builds motorhomes, pays huge dividends.  For example, preventing squeaks and rattles is a top priority.  Road test a Born Free on any “washboard” back road and every time it comes away the winner.  Born Free’s comfort in ride and minimal road noise can be directly attributed to its rounded exterior lines.  The contoured front cap prevents the kind of noise that often occurs when a front slab-sided motorhome penetrates the air.  The contoured roof and wall also contribute to excellence in handling.  This coach can be driven all day long at 75-plus mph, with little if any fatigue.

For those who have never driven a motorhome and who are concerned about being able to pilot one, such fears instantly evaporate behind the wheel of a Born Free.  With its automotive cockpit configuration, the Ford cab feels immediately familiar, even to the complete novice.  If you can drive a large sedan you can drive the 26’ Born Free.

When outside temperatures hover at 100-plus degrees, it’s totally transparent to those inside.  Powered by an onboard 3.6 kW genset, the 15,000 BTU roof air conditioner maintains a comfortable 65-70 degrees inside.  Other design features that contribute to temperature management include standard dual pane tinted windows and R7 residential style fiberglass insulation that is packed tightly in the pockets created by the kiln dried wood stud infrastructure.  The smooth molded high gloss fiberglass exterior surface and the padded carpet type material that dresses the interior walls, make their own contributions at keeping outside temperatures where they belong, outside.  In colder climes a ducted forced air furnace provides comfort.

The 26’ Born Free Casual Elegance is offered in two floor plans, a coach wide rear bath and a rear bedroom/rear corner bath.  The salon area includes two UltraLeather covered lounge chairs and a fold-up-and-out table that remains housed out of sight against the curbside wall until needed.  The UltraLeather covered Flexsteel sofa/sleeper is exceptionally comfortable, both for sitting and relaxing and when converted into a sleeping quarter.  An optional power adjustable lift bed, with removable back cushions so it can be enjoyed as a sofa during the day, is also available.

The area above the cab comes standard with a queen size bed.  However, it can be enjoyed with an optional entertainment center, plus additional storage.  Every coach features custom crafted cabinetry that is created from hand selected cherry. Other types of woods are available.  All woodwork and solid surface countertops are handcrafted in-house.  The private bath comes complete with lavvy, shower, marine style toilet,

medicine cabinet and power vent.

Every Born Free comes with the

Travasak Sleep System.

I have described the wall and roof construction, but other design features underscore the quality that goes into every Born Free.  Its seamless floor is made of solid wood that is sandwiched and laminated between sheets of fiberglass, making it impervious to moisture, dust and debris from the road below (including salted winter roads).  Particle board is not found anywhere in a Born Free Motor home, for it can swell and weaken should moisture intrude.  The seamless fiberglass exterior carries a 10-year limited warranty against hail damage and corrosion. A system of 2” tubular steel roll bars, with steel cross members are encapsulated in fiberglass and integrated into the roof and the walls.

Every unit is built and tested by a single team who is responsible from the start of construction, down to the resolution of any issues discovered during testing, prior to shipment. The immediate feedback received by resolving issues on a real-time basis, helps to perfect an already high skills level.
