The Alpenlite SUTC: A Truck Camper on Steriods

Lazelle Jones

The Sport Utility Truck Camper (SUTC) combines the synergies that exist between the livability of a truck camper and all of the RV lifestyle function it offers and the need for the adult toy enthusiast to haul and satiate the need to bring along and enjoy ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, etc.).  Available is two models (the 940 and the 1180) the Alpenlite SUTC marries the best of both worlds.

With a gross dry weight of 2,800 pounds (max) a heavy duty ¾ ton truck will support the Model 970 and a one-ton truck platform will support the Model 1180.  Yielding less gross weight than comparable size truck campers the importance of this become apparent when the weight of toys is factored in to the gross load put in the truck.  The Model 970 can carry one quad, or one snowmobile, or two motorcycles.  The 1180 can haul two quads, or two snowmobiles, or four motorcycles.  The hinged-along-the-top rear wall swings up for loading and off-loading toys.  With the toys off loaded and the rear wall lowers to the road ready position, a conventional truck camper style door in the rear wall makes entering and exiting the SUTC just like any other truck camper.

The toy enthusiast decides what type of after-market ramps to use depending upon the types of toys to be hauled.  The cargo area includes a full length track type cargo tie-down system, with D-rings for securing the toys.  With the cargo bay empty the bench-style sofa/sleeper and a fold down dinette that are tucked against the interior walls while hauling toys, fold down for service.

The SUTC cab over sleeping area can be equipped with a king or queen size bed.  With the bench/sofa/sleeper, the convertible dinette and the optional fold down bunk beds that are located midway in the unit, the SUTC can comfortably sleep eight adults.  Located forward of the cargo bay on the street side is a full service wet bathroom that includes a full standup shower and a marine style toilet. Now follows next is unique to the world of truck campers.   Included are three humongous size holding tanks (fresh, gray and waste) all of which have holding capacities of fifty gallons each.  With this kind of holding tank capacity and with prudent resource management, RV camping can be enjoyed for extended periods in primitive, stand-alone RV camping conditions, just the kind of setting that toy enthusiasts seek out to enjoy.

To support primitive RV camping the SUTC can be equipped with an optional 2.5kW LP fueled Onan auxiliary generator.  With the 110-volt genset and a standard equipment ten gallon LP tank as it fuel source the SUTC has the ability to power the 13,500 BTU roof mounted air conditioner and meet all other 110-volt electrical needs simultaneously.  The SUTC comes with eye catching exterior graphics and with its standard 30 amp shore power service cable the SUTC is as much at home in an upscale RV campground as it is parked in a mountain meadow or in the midst of a stand of tall timber.

The SUTC is well insulated and is capable of providing a cool sanctuary in hot desert temperatures or hot and humid settings.  On the opposite end of the temperature spectrum, the 20,000 BTU LP fueled forced air furnace makes using the SUTC a s base camp for an elk or deer hunt totally doable.  Equally important is how WRV has designed and builds the walls, roof and floor.  Vacuum laminated structures that incorporate welded aluminum members with cut to fit pieces of bead foam insulation.  This is dressed on the interior with wall board and on the exterior with gel coat high gloss fiberglass.

The SUTC’s RV appointments underscore the luxury side of the RV lifestyle.  A full service galley includes a 2-burner LP cook top, a double stainless steel sink, microwave oven along with cabinets and cupboards for storage.  Housed in the cab over bed and adjacent to the galley is a 4-5 cubic foot refrigerator/freezer.  The cab over area also houses a wardrobe.  A 20” flat screen television can be mounted on the forward bulkhead with a DVD and AM/FM radio offered as options.  The TV’s adjustable robotic arm makes it so the television can be seen from any area inside the unit, from the cab over bed area to the dinette or bench sofa in the rear cargo bay living area.

The SUTC accommodates very nicely the outdoor sportsman and extreme sport enthusiast. Six feet long overhead cabinets in the cargo bay are a perfect place for the outdoor sportsman to stow rifles, shotguns and fishing poles.  Storage pods can be added to the roof as a place to store the tools of the trade for those who enjoy kayaking or surfing.

The Alpenlite SUTC comes with a base Mfg. Suggest Retail Price that starts at $28,546. A fully optioned SUTC costs a few dollars more.  www.wrv.com
