The issues associated with trying to combine having around-the-town transportation, the desire to enjoy the RV lifestyle and the need for decent fuel economy, have just been solved by Roadtrek. Their all new SS-Agile (built on the short Dodge Sprinter Van Chassis) is powered by a five cylinder Mercedes turbo diesel engine that comes married to a five speed automatic transmission. With a GVWR of 8,550 pounds; an exterior length of 19’ 4” (including the rear Continental spare tire kit); a width of 76” and the turbo diesel engine, end users testify that the SS-Agile delivers between 24 and 26 miles per gallon. For a fully self contained motorhome, this is phenomenal!
Being able to run to the mall and park in places where full-size sedans are driven and parked, or being able to haul kids (total five) to a soccer game and then having a bathroom, changing room, kitchen, bedroom or living room your disposal, makes this a highly functional vehicle. And when it comes time for a weekend getaway or an extended multi-day motorhome vacation, the Roadtrek SS-Agile reveals the other side of its split personality. In every sense of the word, this is a self-contained, full-service motorhome.
When the Roadtrek SS-Agile reaches a campsite its transformation into a motorhome is instantaneous. Plug into 30-amp shore power, connect to city water, pull the curtains across the windshield, swivel the captain’s chairs to face aft and you are “good-to-go.” If you’re at a primitive, stand-alone campsite where there are no hook-ups, don’t despair for the holding tanks (fresh 21 gallon - gray/waste 22 gallon) and the 2.5 kW auxiliary generator make it totally transparent to those inside that they are not in an RV resort.

The SS-Agile features a permanent wet-bath, a fixed venue that is housed behind a solid wall/door structure. Taking a shower is as simple as turning on the bathroom light and power vent and closing the door. The six-gallon propane water heater and water pump provides a steady supply of hot water. A vanity/sink over the toilet slides out for use and slide back out of the way when it’s not being used. A translucent window provides defused light inside the bathroom.
The rear of the coach is both the dining area and the bedroom. Bench-style seats on the outside walls and the rear passenger power-sofa across the back of the unit, creates an L-shape configuration for seating. If a table is needed, a removable table top can be easily mounted on a removable post.
The rear dining area instantly converts into a bedroom with a king-size bed or twin beds, you decide. For the king-size bed, the table and backrest cushions are used to fill the gap between the side bench seats. Five inch foam provides the padding for sitting or sleeping. The curbside twin bed measures 70” long by 28” wide. The driver-side twin bed measures 76” long by 28” wide. At the foot of the curbside twin bed is a shirt-length wardrobe.

The full service galley is a venue designed to accommodate all food preparation needs. A granite-looking solid-surface countertop includes a European-style two-burner propane cook-top and a large single-basin stainless-steel galley sink. There is a 1.0 cubic-foot convection / microwave oven and an optional 110-volt coffee maker. Below is a 3-way, 3.8 cubic-foot refrigerator/freezer. Storage includes a slide-out pantry.
Standard and optional appointments include a 110-volt 19” remote-control flat-screen television in the dining/bedroom area. It comes mounted on a rotating arm/bracket. An optional home-theater system includes 5.1 surround sound with a DVD, CD and an AM/FM radio, dual center channel speakers and dual-use rear speakers. The optional patio awning measures 9’ 10”. The cockpit captain’s seats can be enjoyed with OptimaLeather, with simulated leather on the sides of the chairs and chair backs. The window coverings include pleated day/night blinds and curtains. The 11,000-BTU roof-mounted air- conditioner can be enjoyed with a heat strip, a nice feature that takes the chill off cool mornings, while a 16,000-BTU forced-air furnace tames the colder temperatures.
What Roadtrek does with Dodge Sprinter Van/chassis when they receive it from DaimlerChrysler is worth noting. First, the exterior shell is modified to accommodate the installation of windows and other parts and systems. Next, the water and propane tanks and the auxiliary generator are installed on the underside to maximize interior space. All interior systems, fixtures and components are installed and last the exterior finishing touches such as awning, graphics, striping, etc., are added.
Nicely appointed the SS-Agile is offered at $75,465 US. Fully appointed with awning, roof air-conditioner, coffee maker, generator, home theater, OptimaLeather captain's seats, screen package, flat screen TV and aluminum wheels, the MSRP is $83,668.
