Taking delivery of a 22’ Airstream International (photo - exterior) from Great American RV in Fife, WA, we enjoyed two weeks of travel and touring up and down British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, from Victoria to Pt. Hardy and back Our tow vehicle - a 2500 Dodge Ram - averaged an amazing 16 mpg. The excellent fuel economy can be directly attributed to the Cummins turbo charged diesel engine that sips fuel and the contoured exterior lines of the Airstream International that permits it to slip effortlessly through the air. The synergy that exists with this truck and trailer combo was matched only by the beauty, menu of delightful sights and fun things to do all along the 300 mile length and 100 miles width of Vancouver Island.
The towing characteristics and road manners of the Airstream that we towed for more than two weeks and more than a thousand miles, left little room for critique items. Equipped with a load-leveling - spring bar - hitch device and an electronic brake controller, the 22’ 4” long Airstream International accepted all towing challenges and did so nicely. Even along the winding mountain roads that took us out to Tofino on the left coast of Vancouver Island, we experienced no fish-tailing or trailer sway. The unit tracked nicely behind the Dodge Ram under all driving/towing conditions - Interstate, urban settings and mountain/country roads.
All Airstream models and floor plans are true four-season travel trailers for they are built to be used and enjoyed in all kinds of weather and climates - they are well insulated and come standard with heated holding tanks. They come equipped (standard or optional, depending upon the model and floor plan) with a 13.5M BTU roof air conditioner that includes a heat strip, and a forced air furnace that ranges from 12M to 30M BTUs. Holding tank capacities are sufficient and with prudent fluid management several days can be enjoyed without filling the fresh water tank of dumping the gray and waste holding tanks. Single or twin LPG - propane - bottles are the fuel source for the furnace, 3-burner cook-top, 2-way refrigerator/freezer and electric ignition water heater. When staying at a campground the unit can be hooked to 30 amp shore power, while the two deep cycle house batteries make stand-alone RV camping totally doable. Depending upon the model, the bath will be a residential style or a wet bath.

The 22’ International we enjoyed came equipped with a wet bath (photo - wet bath) which is the most efficient configuration for space management. Other Airstream appointments can include a sofa/sleeper, galley sink, microwave oven, wardrobe, full size bed, storage cabinets, pantry and an LCD television w/DVD player . The interior décor choices include Hazard Orange, Lemongrass, Dandelion and Blue Streak, all of which are accented by the polished aluminum surfaces that lace the interior. The floors are a wood type laminate while the windows are tinted both for privacy and to reduce solar effects on interior fabrics and surfaces. All Airstream International travel trailers come pre wired for satellite and an optional solar package. Other features include Sirius satellite radio and an external speaker jack.
Chassis construction features either single or tandem axles - depending upon the length of the unit - and electric brakes that accommodate the 5,600 pound GVWR 22‘ Airstream International. This model yields a net cargo carrying capacity of 1,495 pounds. The body infrastructure features aircraft style Monocoque ® construction.
