From Dallas Glitz to Cow Town Fort Worth
The Metroplex has it all!

Rhonda Pipkin
Dallas, a young city by comparison to others in the US is colorful and diverse. Founder, John Neely Bryan, a Tennessee lawyer, saw the area in 1839 and decided the land was good. Local Indians, rough land, and the presence of a river spoke “trading post” to him and in 1841, Bryan packed his belongings and headed west. His was not a chase for gold mines as others, but to indulge himself in the claim of 640 acres of rugged lawless land. He went on to sketch out a town with plans for the local courthouse along with 20 streets.

Dallas is fluid. Moving and growing. Expansion can be documented through the years. Suburbs appear and then become swallowed up as part of the great “Metroplex.” Unless you are a resident, it is difficult to tell where Dallas County ends and Tarrant County begins. Dallas is host to a wealth of entertainment: Dallas Stars hockey league and Mavericks basketball at the new American Airlines arena, the West End District with Deep Ellum full of Jazz and Blues, Texas Stadium home of the Dallas Cowboys in Irving, and The Arlington Ballpark home of The Texas Rangers, as well as Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor, downtown Dallas Aquarium and Zoo, Fair Park, Dallas Speedway, and the Lake Lewisville Marina. Shopping is luxury at the Galleria, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom’s, and the huge Grapevine Mills Outlet Mall just to name a few. It’s JR Ewing’s Dallas or Walker Texas Ranger at its best. It’s just Dallas!

For the RV’er, a great place to park and rest is “Destiny Dallas. A Five-Star Resort located 20 minutes North of Dallas on I-35E and 35 minutes Northeast of Ft. Worth, (refer to map above). Although only an hour away, Fort Worth has its own style and flare. Seeing the rail trains and hearing the sounds of the stockyards, takes one back to the Wild West. It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes you can catch a wild cattle chase being aired on the radio. I’ve heard it a few times in the past while driving through the countryside. Policemen on horseback and motorcycles trying to round up cattle that escaped an 18-wheeler passing through. Once my travel writing friend told me a story of seeing a bull loose at Billy Bob’s Texas and watching cowboys in the back of their pick-up trucks trying to chase him and rope him. Needless to say, he took them on more than a “goose chase.” What do you do when you rope a 2000 lb. bull and you’re standing in the back of a truck? When he takes off in the other direction, you let go!

Fort Worth, situated on the Clear Fork of the Trinity River, and named after US Army General William Jenkins Worth, a hero of the Mexican War, is known for its diversified economy. Major interstates, railways, and the sharing of the International DFW airport have helped Fort Worth to grow substantially.

Fort Worth includes the city of Arlington in its logistics. Arlington lies between Fort Worth and Dallas. Together, the two cities make up the largest metropolitan complex in the DFW Metroplex. Fort Worth’s “Cow Town” nickname came about through the early years of cattle drives and rail shipments of cattle into the stockyards. Once filled with the sounds of mooing and snorting from cows and bulls, the stockyards now sport a different sound. The night comes to life with the flavor of nightclubs, country music, line dancing, and the aroma of Tex-Mex food. Although the fashion is different than that of Dallas, the shopping and style is still uptown in Cow Town.

The RV’er can enjoy and appreciate the parks in the Fort Worth areas. RV parks centrally located make the Cow Town adventure enjoyable as you pursue the adventures of the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum, the Nature and Science Museum with Noble Planetarium, the award winning Four Block Water Gardens, Botanical Gardens, and the Fort Worth Zoo. For the children and young at heart, I should mention there is Six Flags and Hurricane Harbor in Arlington.

The All Seasons RV Park in Arlington is a 15 acre wooded park with shady pull through and some paved hook-ups. All are full hook-up sites with 20/30/50 amps. There are private restrooms available. All Seasons RV Park has 118 sites. Forty-five of these sites accommodate pull-through. 110 accommodate double slides. There are eighty sites which can handle the maximum length coaches. All Seasons RV is a gated community with security entrance. For reservations email at: allseasonsrv@gocampingamerica.com. The park is located at 2715 S. Cooper (exit 449B from I-20; take Cooper, exit Northbound 1.8 miles). For further information you may call 1-866-778-7275.

Further south of Fort Worth is Cow Town RV Park located at 7000 I-20 West in Aledo, Texas. This is another “Go America” RV Park. It is decorated in ranch style and has 104 paved sites. All sites are 50 amps pull through. Laundry, propane, cable television, instant phone, and high speed internet services are available. This RV park is able to accommodate 45 ft. coaches and their daily rate averages $29.95 with a 10% discount for Good Sam and FMCA members. For more information you can call them at 1-800-781-4678 or email: info@cowtownrv.com.

Remember, whether glitz, glamour or a lot of bull, for wintering Texan’s, the Dallas – Fort Worth metroplex is a place full of excitement, entertainment, mild weather, and never ending fun. Hope to see you there!
