Lake Weiss

Crappie Captial of the World

John C. Jones

Now, I would be the first to admit that in the South, there are a lot of "crappie capitals of the world."  I think the local Chamber of Commerce are the ones that vote and decide!  However, Lake Weiss, (pronounced "Wice") is an main contender for the title for sure!

The Weiss Lake fishery is the major economic influence in Cherokee County, so the locals treat anglers very well. Four free public access areas and 37 privately run marinas service Lake Weiss. Campgrounds, motels and rental cabins dot the shoreline of the lake.  This "Crappie Fishing Capital of the World" has other fish to boast about these days; largemouth bass and striped bass are making a name for themselves.  Bream, shad and crawfish are abundant in the lake's stump flats, sloping points, weed beds, and strong feeder creeks.  The largemouth bass fishery has been a best-kept secret for several years. Data collected from tournament anglers and state fisheries personnel has shown that Weiss Lake is one of the best places to "get that mount for the wall!"  There is some outstanding striper fishing on this lake that will challenge the skills of any fisherman.  The lake offers 447 miles of shoreline, shallow flats, underwater dropoffs, deep channels, and large coves. Open all year.

Chestnut Bay Resort (an Editor's Choice recommendation) offers a beauitful setting for your vacation.  With villas located lakeside and just a few steps away, a heated pool, memory-making fishing, and water sports await youLocated at: 4480 County Road 44- Leesburg, Alabama 35983.  This resort was once a fishing camp, but now filled with villas for rent by the owner for your vacation to be "special." There are several types of unique and beautifully designed homes. Each has a specialized set of features to fit all individual needs. With more than a dozen units in the complex; and additional units are being designed and ready for building, your choices will be unlimited.

There are 4/5 bedroom lakefront homes and villas are more than adequately furnished, and some units have a fireplace or private hot tub. Nine units are located directly on the lake each with their own pier. A well-marked walking trail surrounds the resort. Walk it eight times you’ve walked two miles.

As all of the homes are individually owned, some houses may offer different supplies. Each home was originally equipped with a blender, basic pots & pans, plates, glasses, & silverware. We do provide one roll of toilet paper per toilet,a roll of paper towels, and one garbage bag to help you get started. Activities:  In addition to just chilling out at the resort the area offers many miles of hiking and biking trails with scenic waterfalls and majestic overlooks. Take a pontoon boat under the old railway bridge to the huge rocks forming the Yellow River Waterfall. Explore underground in a cave, rappel sheer rock cliffs, kayak a raging river, and fly fish from nearby streams and lakes. Go horseback riding, rappel from sheer rock cliffs, snow ski at Cloudmont, kayak the Little River or go underground to the "Looking Glass Lakes" of Sequoyah Caverns. Bonus points: Ten minutes away in Leesburg is an original 1957 drive-in theater. And Cherokee Rock Village (formally known as Little Rock City) was the location in 2006 for the movie, Failure to Launch, starring Matthew McConaughey & Sarah Jessica Parker.
