Maruba Jungle Resort and Spa
Belize, Central America

John C. Jones
Travel/Food Writer

When traveling a lot, it is possible to wake up one morning and not be able to remember where you are. That happened to me once in Jordan , while traveling the Middle East . The last time it happened was a few months ago. I awoke to an unusual setting, such beautiful sounds, and sights, I thought, surely I must have awakened in “paradise.” It certainly looked like the Garden of Eden in my professional opinion !

I was sunk deep into bed with a luxurious feather comforter on top, tropical birds filled the air with exotic sounds, and from my windows I could see the early morning sun shining through the large semi-transparent tropical flowers that seemed to be blooming all around my cabaña. Remembering the brochure for the Maruba Spa of Belize Central America, I realize they had under-advertised the beauty of this jungle retreat!  My main agenda that day was to schedule my morning and evening body massages and scrubs.

While the birds filled my room with their morning songs, and the tropical flowers flooded the room with exotic aromas, picking up their brochure I read… “Maruba Resort Jungle Spa ® is a place forgotten by time. An oasis of charm and grace where everyday problems melt away. Not your traditional spa, Maruba offers an alternative to the regimen and routine. The resort has been conceived and created to blend various Mayan, Creole, and African designs side by side with our jungle setting. The result is dreamy, romantic, and totally relaxing.

Relax amidst the richness and splendor of exotic birds and fauna. Our Jungle Falls swimming pool will cool you in the day and the Japanese tub will make evening star gazing an unforgettable experience.
Our spa offers all natural treatments derived from ancient techniques which incorporate our natural products produced from Maruba Therapy ® and the surrounding jungle environment. We specialize in a number of Mud Treatments using our all natural Mood Muds®. Indulge yourself and be taken away from the hustle & bustle of everyday life. All rooms have air condition, tile floors & radios with CD players.”

Now I also understood why Maruba is the only hotel, resort and spa in Belize chosen to be a member of the American Express Platinum Card Fine Hotels, Resorts and Spa Program. They certainly earned my “best pampering award of the year.” They offer the Garden View Suite (2), Chapel/”Honey mood ” Suite, Jungle Villa Suite, Master Suite, Jungle Tree House Suite, and the Opium Villa suite (will accommodate 5 guest. A guest can choose between the following plans: Arabian Plan ( Standard room and breakfast) , Modified American Plan (Standard room, breakfast, and dinner) American Plan (Standard room, breakfast, lunch and gourmet dinner). Open air dining under candle light at night with gourmet meals, will insure a “trip to remember.”

Arriving at the airport, one takes the New Northern Highway heading north and at mile marker 40 and 1/2 turn back east deeper into the Jungle until you arrive at the entrance to “paradise.” With reservations they will pick you up at the airport and take you to the resort. Each unique suite is set into the jungle so one does not realize there is another world beyond your “secret suite.” You will never be bored with all the activities available. One can have guided boat tours on Crooked Tree Lagoon and experience the awe of the Jabiru Stork, the largest bird in the Western Hemisphere , as well as the colorful array of other wild and exotic birds. See the exclusive Baboon or Howler Monkey in their natural habitat. For fishermen, the Northern River (which is a prime fishing area) empties into the Caribbean Sea and is located about one mile from Maruba Resort Jungle Spa.

The resort offers a number of different fishing trips.
•  Freshwater: Bass, Catfish and Gar
•  Brackish water sport fishing including Tarpon (2-3 ft.) and Snook
•  Saltwater flats provide an excellent opportunity to Bonefish
•  Saltwater fishing allows one to catch Grouper, Snapper, Jack, and Barracuda.

There is a large choice of activities such as the boat ride from San Pedro that takes one through mangroves, tropical flora, fauna, orchids, bromeliads, and birds. Guided tour of ALTUN HA - famous Mayan Ruin or horseback ride in tropical jungle and learn about the flora and fauna Tropical lunch. Fishing, horse riding, snorkeling in the sea, Mayan ruins, swimming pool, hot tub, but the real specialty are the spas! Massages, six types of mud body packs, detoxifying and exfoliating scrubs for the entire body, body wraps, manicures...all the pampering one could ever dream of. After all, you are in paradise! I had been their guest for two days, experienced all of the above I could squeeze in 48 hours.

For now, it is “back into the real world.” What a shock, but “I shall return.” Paradise is spelled, Maruba Resort Jungle Spa of Belize . Ok, I confess, spas are my weakness. I love them!
