The Great Durango to Silverton, Colorado

Train Ride

John C. Jones, Editor

There are some things we do that we wish we had not done, some we feel we did not get enough experience for our money after doing them, and some things are like the narrow gauge train ride from Durango that provide us one of life's great experiences

This historic train has been in continuous operation for 126 years, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives along the scenic and beautiful mountainous route from Durango, Colorado to the mining town of

                                                                                  Silverton, Colorado.

The train travels long narrow mountain edges, along side rushing Animas river waters, and into the unique village of Silverton.  This is an "all day" event, leaving out of Durango about 8:15 am and returning about 5:30 pm.  There is also a later schedule, and  schedules and prices can be seen online.

The pause in Silverton to shop and time to dine with a choice of over 20 places to choose from, and remaining time to explore the various shops.  I have visited with people in Texas who have taken the family numerous times as each of their children got to the age to enjoy and appreciate the adventure.

The train provides a dining car where drinks, food, etc. for the trip can be purchased once the train leaves the depot.  One would think that since you are a "captive audience" for the next several hours that prices would be exhortation, but that is not the case - it is very reasonably priced.

Happy train rides!
