Family Friendly African Safaris

Lazelle Jones

Operating premier safari camps, resorts and lodges throughout Kenya, Heritage Management Ltd. brings to East Africa the high level of quality service for which the region and the Heritage group are both known.  Offering lavish and intimate settings, the service offered through their Explorer Collection is nothing less than five-star.

However, for the family who comes seeking an affordable safari experience, the Heritage Intrepids Safari Camps and Lodge collection also offers a quintessential four star African safari experience.  Comprised of several different resorts, camps and lodges, this collection of prime destinations and safari base camps include the Sambura Intrepids Luxury Tented Camp, Mara Intrepids Luxury Tented Camp and Kipungani Bay

All Safari Camps, Resorts and Lodges offer the Heritage’s Family-Friendly Safari Programs that include youth programs like the Adventurers Club for children ages 4-12, and the Young Rangers Club for teens.  Families spend their mornings and evenings together on guided game drives out among the Big Five, including elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and cape buffalo. In the afternoon the youth programs include learning about the bush through the fascinating “bush schools” which includes excursions to historical sites, practical conservation work and cultural and sporting exchanges with the local Maasai and Samburu communities.  With the Adventurers Club and the Young Rangers programs designed specifically for these age groups, the family can spend quality time together experiencing the magic of a family Africa safari and at the same time enjoy programs that are age specific.

Nairobi, Kenya is the safari capital of the world and upon arriving at the international airport a Heritage representative is there to meet and greet you.  While in Nairobi it is possible to visit the Dame Daphne Sheldrick’s elephant and rhino orphanage and to feed and care for the rare Rothchild’s giraffe.  From Nairobi all Heritage camps, resorts and lodges are reached by air.

Samburu Intrepids is located in Kenya’s rugged Northern Frontier District, a lodging venue that  looks out over the riverbanks where elephant, buffalo and zebra come to water.  It is Samburu Intrepids’ location deep inside the reserve that guarantees close encounters with elephants, leopard and Samburus’ famous ‘special five’ – the rare reticulated giraffe, long necked gerenuk antelope, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra and the majestic Besia oryx.   This luxurious tented lodge offers 27 modern tents with private views of the river.  This is luxury camping at its very best, with accommodations that include soft four poster beds, mahogany closets, writing desks and in-suite bathrooms and showers.  The public areas are palm thatched and open, with the main dining room opening onto a terrace where buffet breakfasts and lunches are served.  An outside bar, sunbathing area and swimming pool are also featured.

Arguably Kenya’s finest game reserve (with the best game and bird viewing found anywhere in Africa), the Mara Intrepids is located where the “Big Five” (elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo) roam freely in a habitat that is truly theirs.  The nearby Mara River is where each summer a million wildebeest and zebra make their annual migration crossing.  Mara Intrepids includes 30 luxury tents that are furnished in the classic style of the grand African safaris.  Each accommodation provides guests with the optimum of privacy and peace. Each tent sits on a raised platform that offers sweeping views over the riverbanks where the animals come to drink.  Four poster beds and handsome reproduction furniture are accompanied by modern in-suite bathrooms, hot showers and all the modern amenities. Mara Intrepids features open-air dining where private meals and functions can be arranged.  Dinner is served under a traditional makuti thatch roof, while breakfast and lunch are hosted on a breezy terrace beside the swimming pool.  Other features include a bar and a conference room.

Perched on the edge of Kipungani Bay on the northern coast of Kenya, where a protected mangrove channel meets the end of a beautiful 12-kilometre white beach on the southwestern tip of Lamu Island, Kipungani is the ultimate dream destination for those seeking a true desert-island holiday. As well as all the usual aspects of coastal relaxation – sunbathing, swimming, kayaking, and snorkeling over spectacular coral reefs – Kipungani offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a coastal culture that has been unchanged for centuries. The property has an extremely close bond with the people of neighboring Kipungani Village, who will show you their ancient boat-building and mat-weaving techniques, take you sailing and fishing in the remote Dadori Nature Reserve, or show you their model education and health facilities – all built with the support of Kipungani and her guests.
