Camp Mack Fishing Camp on the Kissimmee River in Florida

John C. Jones
Travel/Food Writer

This is “the real thing fishing camp.”  Not a tourist trap!  There is the “fire ring” that is continually fed and only goes out when the heavy rains come and quench the flames.  When the fire ring started is as much a mystery as when Camp Mack started.  The camp can be traced back into the early part of the 20th century.  The fishing tales, the personalities that have sat around this “ring of fire” – were it put into a book would be a sportsman’s best seller for the rest of this century.

We are in the central Florida area!

There is the famous Florida fishing-

We are talking b-i-g bass, crappie, and the usual fresh water fish in abundance!

Tournaments are held regularly by various groups.  The lakes are all joined by canals that ultimately one can find the bay and ocean.  This is not just “one lake fishing.”

We are talking 15 lb. bass and massive crappie!  And lots of them!    Boat rentals:  One can rent a John boat, canoe, bass boat, pontoon boat, or kayak.  The lakes are shallow so fishing in the smaller boats is a wonderful way to explore the marshes and catch fish.  There are air boat rides that accommodate from one to a party of fifteen!

Lake Kissimmee covers some 38,000 acres from the mouth of the Kissimmee River on the north end to the exit of the river near US Highway 60 on the south end.

Lake Hatchineha is around 6,500 acres and is immediately upstream from Lake Kissimmee, and downstream from Lake Cypress. The Kissimmee River enters and exits on the southern end of the lake.

The water in Lake Hatchineha is generally under 8 feet. During the spring months fish will be found in 2-4 feet of water.  The water levels are controlled by flood gates, and the current flowing through the Kissimmee River seems to help fishing around the river mouth and points along the canals. The difference in water depth between winter level and spring-summer-fall can be as much as 18 inches or more, fairly dramatic when a lot of winter-early spring fishing is done in 3 feet of water or less.  We are talking about access to dozens and dozen of lakes along the lake chain connected by the canals.
