There is More Than Fly Fishing
in North Georgia

John C. Jones
Travel/Food Writer

Ok, sorry to disappoint you, but I'll make it up later with articles about fly fishing and fine golfing in Dahlonega, Georgia.  They have both just minutes away. Most anglers are not aware that in the state of Georgia flow nearly 4,000 miles of trout waters. Dahlonega is located in the foot hills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and one third of the county is in the Chattahoochee National Forest making Dahlonega a great place for trout fishing.

Georgia has an active and extensive

            trout stocking program.

Gold Rush: Dahlonega, Vogel State Park, Cleveland

Listed in the top 10 Scenic Drives in Georgia

"Preview: This drive covers about 50 miles; it explores the history of gold in Georgia, the heart of the southern Blue Ridge, and another type of gold in the famous Cabbage Patch Dolls at Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland. Special attractions: Dahlonega’s Gold Museum and operating mines; North Georgia College Campus with the gold-leaf-covered spire of Price Memorial Building; North Georgia Mountains and their glorious seasonal changes including spring, summer, and fall wildflowers, fall leaf color, winter snows, and open hardwood forests; cascading mountain trout streams; warm water lakes and ponds. Chattahoochee National Forest Recreation Areas have camping, hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities; Vogel State Park has camping, cottages, hiking, fishing, nature walks, and more. Hunting in the national forest and wildlife management areas is available in season. Babyland General Hospital is where the popular Cabbage Patch dolls are “born.” This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much mo re.." http://www.trails.com

This is a beautiful Georgia scene I captured as I made a turn in the road, and in North Georgia it seems each turn has something beautiful to offer the traveler.

What I do want to write about a wonderful place to stay while in the area doing your golfing, sight seeing, and fly fishing.  http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ngto/

Mountain Laurel Creek Inn & Spa is an excellent place to stay.  The rooms are some of the most comfortable one will find anywhere (Whirlpool bath, remote control fireplace, spacious rooms, satineen sheets, etc) in Georgia.  The spa has a large variety of treatments to offer, and is very well equipped.  Location:  202 Talmer Grizzle Rd, Dahlonega, GA 30533 - (706) 867-8134

There are walking trails, porches to sit and relax while looking "out into the woods" while staying at Mountain Laurel Creek.

Golf:  The 18-hole "Nicklaus" course at the Nicklaus Golf Club At Birch River facility in Dahlonega, Georgia features 6,937 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.  The course rating is 72.8 and it has a slope rating of 134.  Designed by Jack Nicklaus, ASGCA, the Nicklaus golf course opened in 2000. ClubCorp USA, Inc. manages this facility, with Jon Kitchen as the General Manager. "Tucked within the mountains of North Georgia is the Nicklaus Golf Club at Birch River, a semi-private Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The 6955-yard, par-72 course winds along and across the Chestatee River. In fact, the course crosses this quaint, but famous river not once, but seven times including the unique fifth hole, which plays entirely on an island in the river.  Birch River was designed to optimize the natural environment with unique hole strategies, while providing a feel similar to such classic courses as Pinehurst No. 2, Augusta National and Winged Foot. The course provides surprising challenges, yet enjoyable for players of all skill levels." http://www.nicklaus.com/design/birchriver/

Happy Traveling.
