There is a flurry of activity at the Casablanca Inn on the Bayfront in America’s oldest city. New owners Nancy Cloud and Michael Miles have purchased the acclaimed 1914 beauty that is one of the most photographed destinations in Northeast Florida, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The graceful 20-room Mediterranean revival beauty was featured internationally on The Travel Channel April 10, shortly after gaining stature as one of 11 Florida inns highlighted by Conde Nast Travel. The new owners recognized the Casablanca’s prestigious waterfront location and reputation, now dividing time between the Casablanca Inn and their AAA 4-diamond oceanfront Balance Rock Inn in Bar Harbor, Maine.
A synchronized working team, Nancy handles running the business of both large properties from hiring the staff and handling the inns’ guest operations to the enormous task of bookkeeping. Michael’s strengths are in property renovations and overall maintenance, construction, appearance of staff and grounds plus business marketing. They have been well-known in the hospitality/hotel industry since the late 1970’s when they purchased their first grand ‘summer cottage’ in Bar Harbor, the Ledgelawn Inn.
- One of today’s hot travel topics is traveling with pets. “We have never had a concern with inviting well behaved pets to our Maine inn. So we are now going to welcome them into the Casablanca Inn’s Secret Garden, where they, too, can enjoy the luxury of staying at one of the best historic inns in Florida” both Nancy and Michael agree.
- Another issue is the superiority of the Inn’s beds and mattresses. All beds are now going to have Pillow Top "Select Comfort Sleep Number" mattresses, feather beds with an isotonic mattress pad, 600 thread count sheets, designer Duvet Covers and accessories.
(By coincidence, both historic properties owned by Cloud and Miles have a railroad heritage: The Casablanca Inn was built in 1914 by one of Henry Flagler’s engineers that developed the Florida railroads (Mr. L. Butler) and the Balance Rock Inn was built in 1903 by Alexander Maitland, a Scottish railroad tycoon.)
