Stanley Fisher House

B & B of
Matagorda, Texas

John C. Jones
Travel/Food Writer

A step back into history, but not away from 21st Century comfort – a 1832 home that has been restored into original splendor as attested by the Texas Historic Landmark listing.  Samuel Rhodes Fisher, one of the 300 colonist recruited by Stephen F. Austin, built this house for his family.  The result is a breathtaking renovation that still retains architectural details of the past such as square cut window and door frames, tongue-in-groove paneling, and hand-milled decorative features. Of course, the Stanleys also added modern conveniences like central air and heating to their antique home, as well as extensively renovated the plumbing and electrical systems.

Located South of Houston, less than 60 miles away, Texas beaches, bird watching, fishing in the Colorado River, or the flats for Redfish, or deep sea fishing are just a few of the enjoyments one can engage in.  (See related articles his month as I report on the exciting area of Matagorda County.)

There are presently two   rooms and the adjoining lodge available for rental.

The rooms upstairs have the advantage of a  spectacular view of the enchanting Intracoastal Canal with barges, commercial fishing boats, as well as  recreational boats coming and going on this “highway of the Gulf of Mexico.”

Room 1, known as the Texas Room, the bookshelf is stacked with books about the lone star state and the Civil War located on the first floor, has two double beds and a private bath across the hall. Bath robes are provided.

Room 2, located upstairs, is furnished with a king size bed and has a large private bath.  This is the room for the romantic couple.

Room 3, also located upstairs, features a queen size bed, a daybed with trundle, and a large private bath. sleeps 4 comfortably in the presence of  charming antique toys and country quilts.

There are presently two   rooms and the adjoining lodge available for rental.

Rik and Peggy Stanley, owners, are the type of people you enjoy as innkeepers, and wish you lived right across the road and had them as neighbors to enjoy all through the year.

The Stanley Fisher House Bed & Breakfast, an official Texas State Historical site, is located at 107 St. Mary's St. in Matagorda, Texas. Call 979-863-2920 or click to www.stanley-fisher.com for more information or reservations.

The beautiful Matagorda Beach offers 22 miles of ever changing views of nature and the Gulf of Mexico.  There are many pavilions offer picnic  areas and shelters for the beachgoers.  For the fisherman there is the Jettty  Pier  for fine fishing for speckled trout and red fish – and no charge for fishing from this fine facility.  Flounder fishing is very popular in this area of the Gulf of Mexico.  Every wave and tide brings new treasures for those hunting seashells, sand dollars, etc.
