The Smith House was built in 1884 when Captain Hall purchased this acre of land. While excavating for his new home his son discovered a rich vein of gold ore his delight soon turned to frustration when the city fathers would not allow him to mine so close to town. This is the "personal secret gold mine" of Captain Hall inside of the house. It was found duing renivation of the building.
Today The Smith House is owned and operated by the Welch Family, who have maintained the family tradition of southern hospitality since 1946. 

"The shaft was hidden under the floor for over one hundred years. Workers were removing the concrete flooring in order to renovate the previously used dining room for a new restroom area. This is part of a two phase project which includes expansion of the Restaurant and Hotel areas. The Hotel is anticipating an expansion which will increase the property by 52 additional guest rooms and meeting facilities for 200 guests." Staying at The Smith House puts one near the center of "all things downtown" in Dahlonega, Georgia.
