No doubt about it, “Big D” is the city of charm, and sophistication with cosmopolitan taste. While walking through the garden overlooking White Rock Lake, one is certainly aware of “Big D’s” entitlement to “world class status.”
In this truly “four season” garden one finds (depending on the season) dogwoods, redbuds, fruit trees, jasmine, roses, pansies, camellias, ferns, evergreens, and native plants, just to mention a few.
The over 250 species of birds often fill the air with their unique sounds, bringing a magical atmosphere to the garden.
Some of the special events each year: Cool Thursdays, Ultimate Tree Houses, ArtScape, Autumn at the Arboretum, Tour des Fleurs, Rock Garden, Arboretum After Dark, Holiday at the Arboretum.
“No matter the time of year, the Arboretum is always in bloom. Both spring and fall feature wild bursts of color. Summer does nothing to diminish the bloom of the Arboretum plantings, which thrive on the warmth of Dallas' summer months. And, because of Dallas’ temperate winter temperature, the arboretum is even in blooming the middle of winter. Regardless when you come, there will be plenty to see and plenty of flowers to enjoy.

The Arboretum has developed a number of collections of plants that it features in beds throughout the gardens. These collections include the Hardy Fern Collection, the Holly (llex) Collection, the Native Plant Collection (with interpretive signage), a comprehensive tree species list, and we are working on a map of the trees.
One of the Arboretum's most notable collections is the Azalea Collection. This showcased in the Jonsson Color Garden and features thousands of different azalea varieties. Naud Burnett II, the landscape and architect that completed
the design and installation of the 6 1/2 acre color garden, used azaleas to visually unify the garden. At the time the garden was established, there were only about 15 to 20 varieties of azaleas commonly available in the Metroplex.” Now there are over 2400 varieties of azaleas in the garden. If you are an azalea fan, there are plenty of links.

Several themed gardens are situated on the 66 acres, including a trial garden for research. Featured areas include the Jonsson Color Garden, the Palmer Fern Dell, the Sunken Gardens, and the Lay Ornamental Garden. Also on-site are fountains, sculptures, and two historic mansions. (DeGolyer Mansion, an exquisite Spanish-style hacienda commissioned in 1940 by Texas oil baron Everett DeGolyer Self-guided tours. - Daily 9:00 am-5:00 pm; closed holidays).
