History of The Rogers-Wiseman Ranch
Few San Antonio resorts have such rich history.
2,828.97 acres of land was the total size of the Rogers-Wiseman Ranch at its zenith. Its early history brought a Wisconsin real estate mogul together with a horse-trading Kentucky Colonel who owned some beautiful tracts of land in Texas. In December of 1887, DG Rogers and Colonel Frank P. Hord made a deal. For $75,000 in cash, DG traded his 150-room resort outside Milwaukee for "certain lands, situated, lying and being in the County of Bexar, Texas", 500 head of cattle, three ranch houses and a racehorse named "Texas". DG Rogers later added another 52 acres to his new Texas digs and put son Henry in charge. In 1901, Henry married San Antonian Mary Feldtmann, "Aunt Mary". In 1903, their daughter Blanche was born on the ranch where she was to stay for her entire 79 years.
Shortly after Blanche's birth, grandfather DG passed away and the ranch went to Blanche and her parents. Henry kept working the ranch until he died in 1929. From 1929 to 1933, most of the land was leased, except for Aunt Mary's 100-plus acres.
In 1933, a young cowboy from La Vernia named Ed Wiseman came to the ranch and started working. One thing led to another...and Ed and Blanche were married in 1934. The Rogers-Wiseman Ranch came to be known as Papa Ed's ranch.
Family gatherings continued at the ranch until 1990 when 200 acres were sold for resort development.
Today, the Rogers-Wiseman traditions of family, hospitality and pleasure still hold sway at this resort paradise unique among San Antonio resorts.
