Designed for those who like to play hard but who at the end of the day demand the creature comforts of home, the Next Level Fifth Wheel by Holiday Rambler is in direct response to a burgeoning market that combines the enjoyment of adult toys (ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, jet skis, etc.) and the RV lifestyle.  Available in five floor plans - including two with slide-out rooms - we picked up a unit from Richardson’s RV in Southern California, loaded it with Kawasaki ATVs, and dirt bikes and all of the provision necessary to make our great escape, and then did just that. 

Over a complete range of driving and towing conditions the Next Level Fifth Wheel exhibited superb towing characteristics.  In part, this is attributed to the leaf spring/shock absorber augmented triple axle configuration that’s designed into the Next Level.    The excellent towing characteristics  can also be attributed to the prowess of the tow vehicle, a Dodge Ram truck.   

The same patented Alumaframe Construction that is the signature of Holiday Rambler RVs, is featured in the Next Level Fifth Wheel. In addition to the toys stowed onboard, our cargo consisted of several hundred pounds of helmets, riding boots, camp table and chairs, miscellaneous items that enhance enjoying the great-out-of-doors, personal gear and plenty of food stores.  We also carried fuel for all the toys (more on this in a minute).  Long story short, this unit is designed to accommodate heavy payloads, with cargo carrying capacities that range from 4,670 to 6,040 pounds, depending upon the floor plan.

The Next Level is equipped with fresh, gray and waste tanks that hold 130, 50 and 50 gallons, respectively. Two 30-pound LPG bottles provide fuel for the 2-way refrigerator freezer, 3-burner cook-top (with oven), water heater and the 40M BTU forced air furnace.  As noted the auxiliary fuel (gasoline) tanks – one holds 40 gallons, the other 20-gallons) were designed into the Next Level.  The larger of the two makes it possible to refuel ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles, without having to leave camp to get fuel.  That’s right, the days of carrying gas cans is history.  The smaller tank is the dedicated fuel source for the 5.5 kW Onan auxiliary generator (genset). 

Loading toys is uncomplicated.  The rear exterior wall of the unit doubles as the loading ramp and once the latching/locking devices are released, the rear wall (it is hinged along the bottom) requires minimal effort to open and lower.  Raising it back up also requires minimal effort.  Much like a garage door, the articulating ramp/rear wall is controlled by torsion springs located out of sight along the bottom of the door/ramp.  Once inside the toys were strapped to the nine tie-down rings (each rated at 2,500 lbs.) that are anchored in the floor’s infrastructure. 

The ramp is dressed with a non skid surface while the interior of the cargo bay area is dressed with a poly-coated floor covering that resists oil and gas spills.  Along both sides of the cargo area are over-head storage cabinets and open over-head compartments for helmets, riding boots, etc.  Once gear is stowed here the cargo nets are looped over retaining hooks to keep the gear in place.  But hauling and handling toys and gear is only half of the equation. 

With the toys off-loaded the interior cargo bay quickly converts into a comfortable living, dining and sleeping area, one that yields the essence of what the luxury RV lifestyle is all about. The Next Level comes with a custom tailored section of industrial carpet that rolls out to cover the cargo area floor.  Plush, upholstered (hinged) seats that fold up and out of the way when the toys are inside are quickly configured into a sofa and bench

style seats when a destination is reached.  Between the bench seats, a folding table is placed to create a fully functional dinette.  The bench seats and the sofa can be configured into a very comfortable king size bed.  An Electro-Magic king size bed sits tucked against the ceiling at the rear of the cargo bay when not being use.  It’s lowered and raised by toggling an electric switch.  Optional Electro-Magic bunk beds are also available.  A variety of entertainment equipment is offered as is an optional solid interior wall that permanently separates the galley and cargo areas.

The galley, bedroom and bath yield all of the amenities found in a 5-star hotel, including a queen size bed, full bath and a wardrobe. The galley features a double sink, 3-burner cook-top with oven,  microwave oven, refrigerator/freezer, cabinets, drawers and a large roll out pantry.
