The Safari Chettah:
A Luxury Motor Coach

Lazelle Jones

Once again Safari has taken the Cheetah and the luxury motor coach lifestyle to new levels.  Offering a full side slide-out floor plan called the PANAsuite™ this first of a kind configuration is complemented by a myriad of other innovative enhancements. New options have also been added while several previous options are now included as standard equipment.  Long story short, the luxury coach enthusiast will immediately recognized the added utility, lifestyle improvements and eye appeal the 2006 Safari Cheetah yields.

Model Year 2006 includes seven floor plans, including the all-new 40SFD that features the PANAsuite™ driver side slide-out room that measures 24” deep by 24’ long.  All Safari Cheetah coaches are 100.5” wide and are offered in exterior lengths that range from 36’ up to 40’.  Floor plans can include two, three or four slide-out rooms.  An all-electric (12-volt) power slide-out mechanism and a rack and pinion drive system extends and retracts the PANAsuite™.  To carry the loads of the much longer PANAsuite™ slide-out, Safari has added a third supporting arm.  A second slide-out in the rear stateroom features a dresser with overhead cabinets.  Massive wiper blades glean moisture from the exterior surfaces and automotive crush type bulbs surround and seal the slide-outs in the extended and retracted positions.  Topper awnings prevent the collection of debris on all slide-out roofs.

Equally amazing are the interior space planning opportunities the PANAsuite™ permits, for it houses a sofa/sleeper, self standing dinette, pantry, refrigerator/freezer, closet and rear wardrobe.  When extended, a side-aisle interior hallway is created . When retracted the passageway between the front and rear is via the mid coach residential appointed bathroom.  A pocket door inside the bathroom separates the shower area from the water closet.

Custom built Roadmaster Chassis’ provide the foundation for every Safari diesel pusher coach. These are not mass produced generic platforms. Each chassis is built only after a coach order is placed.  By having each chassis custom built Safari is able to engineer and design the chassis for the length and number of slide-outs included.  The chassis air ride suspension features eight outboard mounted air bags.  Saddle bag construction distributes loads over the center chassis rails and permits Safari to locate the holding tanks in the ideal place. A standard 8.0kW diesel generator is located at the front of the coach.

Other unique features include as standard equipment a 350 horsepower Caterpillar C7 turbo-charged diesel engine (with a 6-speed Allison Transmission) that develops 860 lbs. / ft. torque.  This is a huge plus when it comes to over the road performance, especially when towing (the Cheetah can tow 10,000 pounds).

Roof and wall construction on the Safari features AlumaFrame Construction, a patented process that employs a five layered wall with C-channel aircraft grade aluminum structural members crisscrossing in a grid pattern.  Where the members intersect they are welded.  Holes are punched in the structural member to reduce weight and add strength.  Rubber grommets are added to selected penetrations and used to run electrical wiring through, a feature that permits AC receptacles to be incorporated directly into the walls just as you would find in a residential home.   Residential insulation is added inside each square of the C-channel grid pattern. Luaan backed fiberglass covers the exterior surface, with vinyl wallpaper covered Luaan panel dressing the wall interior.  Every Safari Cheetah comes with an eight layer Diamonte full-body paint job that includes two layers of clear coat plus UV protection.

The roof is a nine layer structure with aluminum trusses and three layers of insulation.  The exterior is fiberglass.  The floor features aluminum structural members with high density, blue cell block foam insulation.  A layer of decibel paper is added to dampen and intercept road noise.  The floor structure is vacuum laminated, with the bottom side dressed with Darco, a rugged material that prevents dust and moisture from penetrating.  The cockpit is a welded tubular steel structure with steel members across the top of the windshield and welded steel members that carry the above-the-dash 27” LCD television.  For added safety, the cockpit seats are anchored to the steel chassis frame.

The Safari Cheetah now comes with a seven foot high interior ceiling   The front and rear caps are now taller and the size of the overhead cabinets have been increased to yield additional storage capacity.  The single piece windshield is also larger, making the view outside greater than ever before.  Dual pane tinted windows are found throughout.

In addition to the new higher interior ceiling, a larger one piece windshield, the PANAsuite™ slide and the 350 hp diesel engine, the Cheetah comes with ceramic tile flooring and Corian® solid surface countertops.  The galley back splash is made to match the tile on the floor.  Solid handcrafted hard wood (alder) is used to create the cabinetry.

With a base suggested retail price that ranges between $188,000 and $215,000, the luxury coach enthusiast will immediately recognize the value the 2006 Safari Cheetah offers.  For the name and location of a dealer near you call 800-458-8735 or visit the website listed above.  Happy Traveling.
