Alabama's Lake Guntersville State Park Resort

John C. Jones, Editor
Travel Photojournalist

Located on the southernmost point of the Tennessee River, Lake Guntersville State Park has a lot to offer.  If you are l ooking for a place to fish, golf, RV, have conventions, then Lake Guntersville Resort State Park provides just the place.  With a massive resort inn, restaurant and convention complex perfect for your group to come an enjoy a reunion, convention, or just fishing or golf.   Not to mention a dining area that serves the best in southern cooking each and  every day.   How about a place to watch eagles, or to have that "never to be forgotten wedding day?  Directions to the majestic 69,000-acre Guntersville Reservoir,  where Guntersville State Park offers over 6,000 acres of natural woodlands and endless miles of lake to enjoy. Photogaph below is a view from my room in the lodge.

The camping area is one of the most beautiful one could wish for - all located right at the water's edge.  "Situated within the pine studded woodlands and adjacent to the reservoir shoreline are 321 improved campsites blending with the serenity of nature. Ranging from the primitive to the modern, complete with utilities, the sites vary to suit nearly every taste. Various campground conveniences include utility connections, tables, grills, bathhouses, hot showers, a country store, and play areas.

Living Room and Kitchen offer an open roomy space with a view

The rustic, but up-to-date 13 lake-view cottages (picture to the right) with a capacity of 1-6 people each. They are equipped with a sitting room  with cable TV and DVD player, kitchen, two baths, and two bedrooms with one King bed and two Double beds. The cabins sit nestled near the banks of the Guntersville Reservoir among a forest of pines and hardwoods.  In addition, the 20 chalets, or the hotel's  99 rooms and 13 suites will meet the needs of any vacationer.

No state can boast better fishing than Alabama.  Lake Guntersville has fresh water fish just waiting to take your lure.  How about bass, crappie, brim, catfish, and much, much more.

Guntersville Lake fish habitat includes milfoil and hydrilla weed beds from which big bass explode on topwater baits to the thrill that even the experienced and veteran fisherman will long remember.  Yes, there are boat rental facilities for those who need a boat - from paddle John boats to outboard boats.   Photo of me with a "starter string of bass" for the day in my kayak.

One of the fine guide services in the area is Lee Pitts, 4690 Main Street, Gaylesville, Al.   Phone 256 442-3787. Lee Pitts fishes tournments over 50 days a year, and guides over 150 days per year between competitive fishing events. It cost no more to have a real pro with you as a guide! Lee guides on Neely Henry, Weiss and Guntersville lakes. He has my "Editor's Choice" endorsement.

Golfers come from over the state and beyond to enjoy the fine 18 hole championship golf course and pro shop at Lake Guntersville Resort  State Park. The course rating is 71.2 and it has a slope rating of 128.  Designed by Earl Stone, the Lake Guntersville golf course opened in 1974.

The golf course has practice driving, chipping and putting facilities.

The 18-hole "Lake Guntersville" course at the Lake Guntersville State Park Golf Course facility in Guntersville, Alabama features 6,785 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.  This Earl Stone design was opened in 1974. Built on top of a mountain. No water in play, lots of blind shots, plenty of trees and very hilly.
